If you are looking for a better option than a conventional heater, you may want to consider using a pellet stove. The latter uses wood pellets as a fuel source, which are renewable and safe for the environment.
The only downside to this is that some regions or states, especially in residential areas, do not allow the burning of wood. Therefore, you have to check first the laws in your locality regarding this before buying a pellet stove.
Proper Placement
Before installation, you must first choose the right space for the unit. Here’s a list of the commonly used spots where you can install your pellet stove:
1. Inside an insulated basement
This area has natural elevation, so it will be easy to keep it warm. This will come in handy at wintry months when you need to work on your basement or do the laundry.
2. Next to the stairway
This is another elevated area of your home, so when the pellet stove is installed next to it, the tendency is for the heat to continue upstairs. Just make sure that the unit is placed someplace where nothing can block the heat flow.
3. Next to a wall exterior
You can put the unit 1 to 2 inches from a wall. This is ideal for reducing ventilation costs since the vent can travel through a rear wall. Aside from efficient heating, this will also look neat since the pipes will be hidden.
Take note that it is not recommended to install a pellet stove in your bedroom. The heat will be contained in the area, so it won’t be efficient in making the rest of your house warm. And besides, the sound of the wood pellets burning may cause a disturbance while you are trying to relax.
Tools You Will Need
You will need the following tools to start the process:
- A construction adhesive
- A drill bit
- Cordless drill
- Grinder with a diamond blade
- Jigsaw
- Stud finder
- Utility knife
- Step ladder
- Non-combustive and code-approved heating pad
You must also have 1 or 2 people to assist you since the pellet stove is heavy to move around. Prepare the heating pad where you will place the unit. Make sure it has the right size, with about 6 inches extension on each side of the stove. The pad is essential since it will serve as your house’s protection in case of a spark or accidental fire.
When it comes to the installation, refer to the manual that comes with the unit. If you aren’t sure you can do it, it is always best to hire a pro for your safety and convenience.
