A wood stove, as the name suggests, emits heat coming from the burning wood. It doesn’t require too many woods for each use, but it is capable of heating a room within a short time. The most typical problem that users encounter when it comes to this unit is heat circulation.
Here are the essential factors to consider if you want to circulate the heat coming from your wood stove properly:
1. Connecting the stove’s fan to a heating duct
This trick will only work if your stove is at an adjacent position or at least near the inline duct. This won’t work in houses with ineffective duct systems.
Take a look into your furnace plenum or the box that connects to the HVAC unit. Its main functions include bringing in, circulating, and removing air. You will see the box on either side of the heat exchanger or fan. Once heated by your stove or cooled by an air conditioner, the air goes first into the plenum, and it is also its last stop before going back to the heat or cold source.
Wait until the stove is already burning before starting the fan. Once done, the plenum will do its job of bringing in, oscillating, and removing the air, and it goes on and on until you turn the unit off.
2. Using fans
The crucial thing here is the placement of the fan – it has to be at the opposite side where you want to blow heat to. Also, ensure that the fan is distant from the stove, or else the air will get cooler instead of heated.
While any fan will do, whether small or large, the better options include small air circulator fans, stovetop fans, and ceiling fans. Keep it at the lowest setting when operating the fan so you won’t get the opposite temperature of what you’re aiming for.
3. Insulate your home
If you are having problems with heat distribution at your home despite having installed insulators, then it’s time to get the space better insulation. When using the heater, keep your doors and windows closed. You need to contain the heat inside. Open your door and windows for a brief period during the day to let the fresh air in. For bigger spaces and rooms, you may want to put thick curtains to help in containing the heat.
When you’ve tried everything and are still having problems with heat distribution, you can ask a pro to look into your unit or have it transferred to a different spot.
